2013 was a great year for our family. Many of our dreams came true and goals met. We took a family road-trip to Disney, we finshed some projects in the house, and we managed to get our oldest into high school.
Our biggest dream, to own a farm, came true just before the holidays. We purchased the land and buildings on a Thursday and then beef cows, a tractor, and other equipment the following Saturday. Merry Christmas to us! Since then, things haven’t changed much, other than Scott running to the farm every night before coming home to feed and water the cows. The kids and I have been able to get there a couple of times, but not nearly as often as we would all like. Last weekend, I did get some good cold-weather gear, so that I can take care of things while Scott is out of town for a couple of days this month. I will slowly turn into a real farmer.
2014 will be bringing many changes for the farm and in turn, our family. We are hoping to build a house at the farm, expand the animals being raised for meat, and add more laying hens to our flock. I’ve been doing a lot of research into what will need to happen for us to be able to sell our locally grown food. Scott’s business plan will be able to support us, but we both know that there is a market and desire in our area for people to be able to buy direct from friendly, family farms. I’m looking forward to a lot of new networking with other local producers, lots of time browsing the web, and finding out what my friends and family are interested in purchasing direct from a farm.
With this blog, I’m hoping to share happenings at the farm and with our family, home-cooked recipes, and share my experiences in managing a family of seven. I hope you all enjoy what I have to say, but most importantly, I am looking for your feedback. The knowledge sharing I’ve found in the blogs I follow amazes me and inspires me. I want to hear your experiences and help with questions and concerns you may have – on farming, parenting, or anything else you are willing to share.
Here’s to a great 2014 for all of us. I am very excited to see what God has planned for all of us.
